Depending on the symptoms and signs, the treatment for lupus can be determined. There are basically three types of medications that are commonly taken for the treatment of lupus if the symptoms are of moderate or mild nature.
- Antimalarial drugs: These types of medications can prove to be quite useful when it comes to treatment for lupus even though there no relationship exists between malaria and lupus. One of the most commonly used antimalarial drugs is Hydroxychloroquine. Weakness in muscles and problems in vision are some of the side effects associated with the use of antimalarial drugs.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These medications can be obtained over-the-counter pr prescribe by the physician if it is a stronger version. Ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen sodium are some of the NSAIDs that can be used when dealing with lupus. Problems in kidney, stomach bleeding and heart problems are some of the known side effects of use of NSAIDs.
- Corticosteroids: These medications are basically used to overcome lung inflammations. The long term usage of these medications can have adverse effects on person suffering from lupus. However, you can reduce the side effects by taking them only for a limited period of time and in small doses. Some of the side effects are osteoporosis, easy bruising, diabetes and weight gain.
However, if you are suffering from severe lupus then you might consider having high dose of corticosteroids and Immunosuppressive drugs but only after you consult with your doctor.
