Most of the people bitten by a tick are kept under stringent observation for at least a month. This is because not all contract this disease right after getting bitten by a poisonous tick. The person identified with this disease is given a heavy dosage of antibiotics. In an ideal case, this medication is started within 3 days of removing the tick from the body. However, a person has to undergo a thorough physical examination before being prescribed with multiple dosages of antibiotics. The doctor checks the patient to confirm if the tick was attached to the body for a period of at least 36 hours. Further, to qualify for the strong medication of antibiotics, the person should be over the age of 8. This medication should be strictly avoided by pregnant as well as breast feeding women.
The treatment of Tertiary Lyme Disease with antibiotics lasts for a period of 28 days. In case, this treatment does not prove beneficial to the patient, a stronger dosage is recommended for another week or so. In a few cases, intravenous ceftriaxone is suggested for a period of 2-4 weeks. This is especially used to manage the severe form of the disease and rectify the disorders in the nervous system.
