What is the treatment of Scleroderma?

There is no specific cure for scleroderma. Treatment methods aim at relieving symptoms like inflammation, pain, swelling etc. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like ibuprofen and aspirin may be prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation. Since scleroderma is a disease associated with abnormal functioning of the immune system, immune suppressants may be prescribed to help relieve the condition. Scleroderma can cause heartburn. For this, doctors sometimes prescribe heartburn medications like proton pump inhibitors. Blood pressure medications are sometimes prescribed to help dilate blood vessels.

These medications increase blood flow to fingers and also protect lungs, kidneys and heart. Doctors may also recommend some exercises to improve joint flexibility. Stretching exercises and swimming are particularly useful. Patients will also have to take extra care of their skin by using mild soaps, moisturizers, humidifier etc. Patients will also have to make some dietary modifications and stick to less oily, less spicy foods which do not irritate the stomach.

Scleroderma can affect the overall appearance of the skin, causing red spots and marring the appearance. Such problems can be eliminated by laser therapy or cosmetic surgery. In some people with localized scleroderma, the symptoms resolve automatically after a while and treatment is not required.
