Treatments for Osteoarthritis include proper exercise, stress control, weight control, Heat and cold therapy, injections into the joint, pain medication, surgery and other pain relief options.
Weight Control: For successful management of arthritis, weight control is very essential. With weight control, one can reduce the pain by decreasing the stress on joints that bear our weight i.e. back, knees, feet and hips.
Proper Exercise: Exercising on a regular basis can prove to be successful in controlling osteoarthritis. Easing the pain, making the joint movement better and enhancing the muscles in the joint area are some of the advantages of doing proper exercise. Exercises used in treating osteoarthritis can be divided into three types: Aerobic exercise, Stretching exercise and Isometric exercise.
Stress Control: Symptoms of arthritis can be adversely affected if a person is suffering from any emotional stress. Some of the techniques that can be used to control stress are: self hypnosis, assertiveness training, muscle relaxation, time management, biofeedback and controlled breathing.
Pain Medication: Since osteoarthritis can lead to both chronic and sudden pain, pain-specific medicines are needed to control osteoarthritis. Some of the OTC (over-the-counter) products for treating osteoarthritis are Aspirin, NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and Muscle relaxants. One can also use antidepressants and sleep medications provided they are prescribed by your doctor.
Some other means of treatment are yoga, physical therapy, acupuncture and therapeutic massage.
