What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus?

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, better known in its abbreviated form, SLE, is an autoimmune disease. This condition severely disrupts the response of the body’s immune system. In normal conditions, the immune system shields the body from foreign invasions of parasites, bacteria and virus.

However, in this disease, the immune system fails to differentiate between healthy substances and harmful substances. As a consequence, the immune system becomes over-active and attacks the healthy cells and tissues of the body. The exact cause of this disease is still not known.
