Arthritis was not considered as threatening as some of the other diseases until mid 20th century. It is because it generally affected only old age people and did not create as much awareness. It was only somewhere around 1950s that arthritis was taken seriously and a foundation called Arthritis Foundation was dedicated specially for this disease.
This has ushered in a lot of advances in this field. Many new methodologies for treating arthritis have been devised. It has helped in reducing death rates, has corrected many deformities that the sufferers have to bear and also helped them in relieving them from immense pain. In the past 35-40 years or so, the researchers have even found an answer for arthritis caused by gout attacks.
Before 1950s, the only solution for Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis was to take support of cranes and crutches. There was nothing the victim could do to save his knee. It was in 1970s that the researchers found out ways to replace damaged knee parts. With the option of replacing worn out tendons and muscles, it is as good as having a new life.
Though it came into limelight very late, the research in arthritis has been at striking pace. Almost everyday, there is something or other coming to help people suffering from arthritis. And this is only going to sustain, if not improve.
