Can Injuries Cause Arthritis?

Injuries are one factor that can cause arthritis. Every joint in the body is surrounded by cartilage which is flexible in nature to provide frictionless movement of the joints. The gaps between the joints are filled with lubricating fluid to assist in movement. The cartilage along with the help of lubricating fluid acts as shock absorbers to prevent your bones from coming in contact.

If you meet with injuries such as fracture or sprain several times, then the cartilage gets weakened over a period of time. Slowly it will degenerate and the joints will start rubbing with one another giving rise to pain, swelling and inflammation. So it is necessary to take bed rest for some time once you meet with such accidents. You must make sure that you do not overstress the injured part of the body in the near future otherwise its life expectancy will reduce and you will get affected by arthritis at very young age. Arthritis will make the cartilage stiff and it will become very difficult to move from one place to another. Injuries can also give rise to infectious arthritis. One injury leading to arthritis is tibial plateau fracture in which the broken part of the bone injects into the knee cartilage.
