Gonococcal arthritis is a form of septic arthritis. It is caused due to infection by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacterium is responsible for the sexually transmitted disease called gonorrhea. When this bacterium affects joints, it leads to a condition called gonococcal arthritis. This disease is seen more frequently among women than in men. Pregnant women, intravenous drug users, HIV patients, people with multiple sexual partners etc are more prone to infection by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Sexually active young girls are particularly prone to this disease. This condition is characterized by fever, pain and inflammation in one joint, rash, abdominal pain etc. This disease does not cause joint damage if treated early.
Blood culture and culture of joint fluids, stool etc will help identify gonorrhea infection. The best way to prevent this condition is by maintaining a monogamous sexual relationship and by engaging in safe sex by using condoms. Gonococcal arthritis can treated be using antibiotics. The infected person as well as those with whom he or she has had sexual contact will have to be treated to prevent the infection from spreading. Overall, the prognosis of this disease is quite good. It responds well to treatment and complete recovery is possible.
