What Is Discoid Lupus?

Discoid lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin of the human body. This disease occurs when the body tissues are attacked by their own immune system. It is a chronic inflammatory problem wherein certain antibodies present inside the blood attack their own body tissues. The male to female ratio of this chronic disease is 1:2 and generally occurs in a person whose age lies between 20- 40 years. It is characterized by scarring type lesion that might occur on the face, scalp, ears or any other parts of the body. They look like re swollen growth with warts and scales on the affected skin areas. If discoid lupus occurs in the scalp region then hair loss and scarring can also occur.

In this, the middle area is light in color and the surrounded area appears darker as compared to the normal skin. If it is neglected then they might mix up with the internal organs and give rise to various other diseases that can make the person fall sick. Initially you might develop malar i.e. rashes. People who are affected by discoid lupus should avoid going out in the sun or should cover their body and apply sunscreen lotion on their body.
