Even though numerous studies have been performed to find out the cause for osteoarthritis, the exact cause for it is still not known. It is believed that several factors combined together starts damaging the cartilage which over a period of time causes the destruction of cartilage. Ageing process is one factor which is the cause behind osteoarthritis. Since sports person and laborers work very hard, their cartilage is also subjected to extreme wear and tear and are at risk of getting osteoarthritis in the later stage of their life.
Damaging events such as fractures and infections are also contributing as a factor for causing osteoarthritis. Due to injuries the cartilage becomes weak and fall easy prey to osteoarthritis. Excessive stressing of joints is also one reason for osteoarthritis. Examples of people doing this are the one who make use of jackhammer, ballet dancer.
As overuse of joints is harmful, similarly no use of joints can even cause osteoarthritis. Inactivity and lack of exercises will make the muscles weak over a period of time thereby decreasing the flexibility associated with the joint. Excessive weight of the body is also one cause for osteoarthritis because the joints will be subjected to severe pressure which will make them weak over a span of time.
