Adult Still’s Disease or Adult Onset Still’s Disease is a disease characterized by the fever, joint pain, swelling and the appearance of pink rashes on the body. Sometimes, people may experience abdominal pain and swelling, breathing difficulty, sore throat and weight loss. If left untreated, it can lead to complications like spleen enlargement, liver disease, chronic arthritis and so on. This disease was first described Dr. George Still and has been named after him. He observed this condition in children. The condition in children is now known as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Adult Still’s Disease refers to this condition in adults. This is a rare disease. Only 1 in around 100,000 people develops this condition every year. It is very difficult to diagnose this condition as its symptoms mimic that of some kinds of viral fevers or arthritis. Comprehensive blood tests, liver function tests will help identify Adult Still’s Disease. This disease is treated in much the same was arthritis. The treatment methods aim to ease pain and inflammation of the joints and to bring down fever. Overall, the prognosis is quite good. In most cases, the symptoms disappear and never return. Some people experience occasional flare ups. Sometimes, this condition becomes chronic and lasts for a lifetime.
